Jerusalem Township is hoping more residents will sign up with an emergency alert system that warns of imminent danger to safety, such as severe weather, as well as public service announcements, in text messages on their cell phones and other compatible mobile devices.
At a Jerusalem Township Trustee meeting in May, Lucas County Sheriff Michael J. Navarre told trustees that deputies will continue to provide road patrols into 2023, although not 24/7 as deputies currently do.
At a recent city council meeting, Oregon officials expressed opposition to any expectations in Jerusalem Township that its police department would provide assistance to the township without compensation.

Jerusalem Township is looking into the possibility of the Ottawa County Sheriff or the City of Oregon providing road patrols after being informed by the Lucas County Sheriff that the service will end on Jan. 1, 2023 unless the township pays for it.
Jerusalem Township Trustees will hold a virtual public meeting on March 23 at 7 p.m. to discuss plans by the Lucas County sheriff to end road patrols in less than two years.
Sheriff Mike Navarre will attend the meeting to take questions from the public.
Jerusalem Township is preparing to update its Comprehensive Master Plan.
"About every 10 years or so, as a township, we are supposed to update our land use or comprehensive plan,” said Township Trustee Mark Sattler. “It’s basically a strategic plan for the township.”

Lucas County Commissioners, in cutting the budget earlier this year, noted that the sheriff’s office is not required to conduct road patrols in the townships. Legally, the sheriff had certain responsibilities, they said. Road patrols were not among them.
