Outside of the top 15 sporting events of 2008, there’s plenty more to remember, including (in alphabetical order):
• Cardinal Stritch girls’ basketball win third TAAC championship in five years as Coach Gary Lemle gets Coach of the Year. • Cardinal Stritch golfer Torey Brummett is named Toledo Area Athletic Conference Player of the Year for the third straight season after shooting a 68 at Detwiler. Waite senior golfer Tom Duris is named City League Player of the Year for the second straight season, but both golfers narrowly miss qualifying for the state golf meet. Lake golfer Matt Smith is named SLL Golfer of the Year. Another Waite athlete, Jeff Brown, advanced to the City League championship in first singles tennis, losing in the final. |

Owens Community College recently honored its fall athletic programs for displaying outstanding excellence during intercollegiate competition. Express student-athletes participating in women’s volleyball and men’s soccer were recognized for their athletic achievements, highlighted by Brittney Bradner of Toledo (journalism major) being named NJCAA Division II Honorable Mention All-American in women’s volleyball.
This marks 12 out of 13 years that at least one Owens volleyball player has received All-American honors. Bradner’s other honors included Ohio Community College Athletic Conference (OCCAC) Player of the Year and several NJCAA All-Region XII awards. |

Despite the fact that the Suburban Lakes League coaches picked Elmwood to win the league tournament in 2009, five-time defending champion Eastwood plans to have some say in the matter.
The Eagles, who graduated six of their top wrestlers from a year ago, were picked to finish second behind Elmwood, last year's SLL runner-up. "With the tradition we've had the last five years, this team doesn't want to be the first team to lose in the last six years," said Joe Wyant, in his seventh year as head coach Ralph Cubberly's assistant. |
