Modified rate plan withdrawn by FirstEnergy

Three days after the Public Utilities Commission of Ohio modified a rate plan filed by utility companies of FirstEnergy Corp., the companies announced they are withdrawing their application for the plan.
 
The Electric Security Plan (ESP), filed by Toledo Edison, Ohio Edison, and the Cleveland Electric Illuminating Co., was approved and modified by the PUCO Dec. 19.
 
Under the plan, total customer rates – covering generation, transmission, and distribution charges – would have increased by an average of 5.3 percent this year, 4 percent in 2010, and 6 percent in 2011, according to FirstEnergy.

11-year-old Northwood boy turns long hair into gift

Nathan Lord didn't get flustered when people standing behind him mistook him for a girl because of his long hair.

"I just turned around and laughed," he said. "Sometimes I'd tell them I'm a boy and they would say, 'Oh, I'm so sorry.' "

Lord, 11, the son of Ed and Brandy Lord of Northwood, has two brothers ages 14 and 8 who have normal-length hair for a boy. Nathan, however, was growing his for a good cause.
The 4-foot-4, 76-pound fifth-grader, who played safety and backup running back for the Northwood Little Rangers football team last fall, donated his boyhood mane to the Locks of Love program as a Christmas gift to kids in need.

Senior programs funded

The Ottawa County board of commissioners at a recent meeting approved three agreements providing services for senior citizens in 2009.
 
The board approved an agreement with Grace Evangelical Church in Elmore for the church to continue as a senior nutrition meals program site at a cost of $63 per day of use.
 
The agreement will be in effect Jan. 1 to Dec. 31, 2009 and will be renewed for another year with the consent of both parties.
