Kerrie Bercher, Cardinal Stritch High School With a 4.20 GPA, Kerrie is ranked 6th in the Cardinal Stritch Class of 2009. She is a member of the National Honor Society, Art Club, Recycling Club and the French Club. Kerrie is on the Bird’s Word staff and is co-editor this year and was Homecoming Queen this year. She has been a Link Crew Member, a Kairos Leader and volunteers at the St. Charles Hospital day care. Kerrie’s primary sport is Soccer (team captain) but she also participates in Track.
The daughter of Edward and Kathleen Bercher, Kerrie plans on attending Cleveland State University where she will major in Environmental Science. In a tough economy, college applications typically increase. However, the current financial crisis might have consequences for how students - and their parents - pay for that education. A recent Sallie Mae/Gallup study shows that families typically use a complex funding mix: parents provide 48 percent of the funds, students kick in another 33 percent, and 15 percent comes from gift aid, like scholarships and grants. The average family covers nearly 40 percent of the costs by borrowing, so it pays to do your homework. |

Local Girl and Cub scouts in the Oregon City Schools were invited to a rodeo at Maumee Bay State Park last months, but there were no calves to rope or bulls to ride.
It was a bike rodeo - a bike safety program geared toward elementary students. The event was conducted by Manda Rice, of Safe Kids of Greater Toledo at Toledo Hospital with the help from Kevin Repeta, of the Northwood Police Department; Mike Poddany, of the Oregon Police Department; and the Jerusalem Township Fire Department. The scouts learned bike safety through a series of education obstacle courses and a bike ride. A safety check was done on each bike and all helmets were properly fitted and checked for safety. |
