It was a celebration of parents and parenting the week of Oct. 20 in Ottawa County.

Ottawa County Commissioners’ President Jim Sass, alongside County Commissioners Carl Koebel, Steve Arndt proclaimed Oct. 19 through Oct. 25 as “You Gotta Love Parents Week” in the county.

The annual celebration began with a Kickoff Breakfast in Port Clinton Oct. 21. The event was sponsored by Family & Children First Council and was made possible through the generous donations of Brush Wellman, Inc., US Gypsum, First Community Church, Gypsum, Elaine Mylander – master gardener, and Ottawa County 4-H.
Judge Kathleen L. Giesler of the Ottawa County Probate and Juvenile Courts, who served as the spokesperson for Parent’s Week emphasized the wonderful job parents and caregivers do with raising the children in the community.

She also shared anecdotes essays submitted by fourth-graders throughout the county about “how parents can be better.”

Earlier in the fall, Judge Giesler visited 26 fourth-grade classes to talk about Parents Week and explain the essay-writing contest. Fourth-graders were given the opportunity to write a 100-word essay about what makes a great parent or a letter to their parents telling them why they are special. The winners of the contests, as well as their families, were recognized at the Kickoff Breakfast. Each winner received a bag of prizes donated from local business.

At the breakfast, community leaders, school officials and parents and grandparents were present to recognize and celebrate people raising children and to promote the role of positive parenting throughout the county.

The Parent’s Week Committee consisted of co-chairs Kathy Booher from OSU Extension and Lori Clune from Probate/Juvenile Court, Judge Kathleen L. Giesler from Probate/Juvenile Court, County Commissioner Carl Koebel, Marcia Jess from OSU Extension, Ralph Yoss with Family & Children First and Janet Gray-Moore with Family & Children First.

And what did the essayists have to say about their parents?

Allen Elementary School
Nick Sifuentes – Mr. Gruber’s Class
Dear Parents,
“I love the way you tuck me in at night and say, “I love you, Nick.”

Mom, I like the way we say to each other, “I love you more,” “I love you better,” – it makes me feel good.

The reason I wake up early is to see you in the morning and say, “Bye Mom, I love you.”

Dad, I’m happy every single morning you help me. I’m glad you taught me manners, responsibilities and about everything I should know and that’s only a few of the billion reasons I love you guys. I think this is something you should know – I love you.

Olivia Shrewsbery- Mrs. Traver’s Class
Dear Dad, You are special because you have two kids that love you so much. Second reason you are special is because you have good father skills for Alex and me, like if we’re bored, you will tell us what to do. An example is going to the park. Third reason you are special is because you can take care of Alex and me, even if we get out of hand.

I love you and I know you love me. I was growing up with you. I miss you and I know you miss me. I will see you soon.

Arian Hayes – Mr. Miller’s Class
Dear Mom and Dad,
I just wanted to say thank you. You guys do so much for me and sometimes I forget to say thanks. When you buy me toys and clothes, that makes my day. But, the thing that means the most is spending time together as a family. You guys are the best parents in the whole world. I hope that one day me and my family can be just like ours.

I love you guys.

Makennah Billegas – Mrs. Gahler’s Class
Dear Mom,
You are special because how much stuff you do for me. Mom, how can I ever repay you for how much stuff you do for me? You’re the coolest mom in the world.

Mom, you always buy me cool stuff too. You can not be more nicer to me because you are already nice enough to me. You are always in my mind and I can not stop thinking about you, Mom.

Thank you for everything that you got me throughout 1999 through 2008. I love you. You’re the best mom.

Jon Gruben – Mrs. Pickerel’s Class
Dear Mom and Dad,
You are special because every morning you rub my back to wake me up. You also make sure my lunch is packed and ready to go to school with my favorite food in it.

You also make sure my soccer uniform is washed and ready to go to the big game. Thank you, Mom, for keeping my health and making my favorite supper, pork steak, mashed potatoes, corn and crescent rolls.

Thank you, Dad, for playing football with me and fixing my bike.

St. Boniface School
Emma Bergman – Mrs. Brahier’s Class
Dear Mom and Dad,
I know I’ve misbehaved and not been the best child, but you’re always there for me. You love me the way I am. When I write, I really see how much work you put into my life so I can be a great adult someday. You are working for my college and I thank you for that.

You love me the way I am and you wouldn’t trade me for anything. I just wanted to say I love you and I wouldn’t trade you either.

I love you, Mom and Dad.

R.C. Waters Elementary
Alannah Pond – Mrs. Martin’s Class
Dear Mommy and Daddy,
I think you are very special. You are always there for me when I’m sad. You always go to my soccer game. You are very nice to me. When I’m playing soccer, you support me. You always help me. When I break my am in the hospital, you were there for me. You get clothes to wear and food to eat. You get me things sometimes I don’t even need because I already have you to love.

When I get scared, you help me get over it. You are special and I love you.

Rheve Martin – Mrs. Snyder’s Class
Dear Mom and Dad,
There are many qualities that make you a good parent. One is that you always like to play with me. Another is that you take me to fun places. My favorite place we go is Rob and Carolyn’s cabin and I’m glad you come to my football games and that we go to Emma’s soccer games. I’m glad we go to Cedar Point and I bet you are too.

I could not have asked for better parents in the world. I love my parents.

Katelyn Wirkner – Mrs. Perkins’ Class
There are many qualities that make a good parent. Good parents are nice to you when you get hurt. They cook you dinner when you get home. Parents love you ever day and night. They give you a home to live, play and sleep in.

When you are feeling blue, they give you hugs and kisses. When your ball game comes around, they support you. They’re there for you when you need them. When it’s time to go to bed, they tuck you in. Parents watch out for you. Best of all, they love you for you.

I love my parents.

Isaiah Jefferson – Mrs. Renner’s Class
Dear Mom and Dad,
I think you are very special. You teach me how to be respectful and how to do my homework the right way.

I listen to you Mom and Dad because I trust you to tell me the right things to do when I am in trouble. The most important things of all is that you care for me. You protect me from anything that I’m afraid of and help me get over my fears.

I love you for everything you do.

Graytown Elementary
Macknicha McCardell – Miss Phillips’ Class
A good parent encourages you on stage or on the field. I takes a good parent to make you feel better when you’re hurt. I love it when I say I want to   join the soccer team and they tell me I would make a great player. I also like it when they smile to show me how proud they are of me. Even when I lose a game, they still tell me I did a great job.

There’s no one like my mom and dad. If only you could understand how much it is to me to have the parents I have.

Summer Swope – Mrs. Lenin’s Class
Dear Parents,
You are special because you always understand. You are so helpful and you comfort me when I fall down.

Dad, I love working in the veggie garden and trapping with you for some “daddy/daughter time.”

Mom, my favorite thing to do is paint with you.

You guys are the ones that put a roof over my head. You’re the ones that put clothes in my drawers. Okay, enough mushy stuff.

You rock! You’re the coolest.

Rocky Ridge Elementary
Elijah Dombrowsky – Mrs. Sage’s Class
Dear Mom and Dad,
You’re special because you’re my favorite and only parents in the whole world. If I had to be adopted and I could pick anyone in the world, I would pick you. You were there my whole life and if you weren’t there a single day, I don’t know what I’d do. I’ve learned a lot over the years, but the most important thing I learned is how grateful I am to have such wonderful parents.

Mom and Dad, the only thing I’m trying to say is I love you so much.
