On Jan. 21, Woodville Police Officer Adam Hammitt was honored at Woodmore Middle School for his lifesaving actions in saving fifth-grader student Bo Ish, who was choking in the school cafeteria on Oct. 26, 2021.
“I was unaware of this situation until the young man's mother reached out to me,” Chief Roy Whitehead said. “When I asked Officer Hammitt about the incident, he expected no recognition, as he was glad he could help.”
Shortly after the incident, Bo’s mom, Jennifer, emailed Chief Whitehead to express her gratitude and commend Officer Hammitt. She wrote:
“On Tuesday, my son Bowen was choking at lunch. He was terrified and wasn’t sure what to do. He looked around for help and noticed officer Hammitt in the lunchroom. He walked over to him and tried the best he could to let him know he was choking. Officer Hammitt performed the Heimlich on Bowen, and after a few compressions, he dislodged the animal cracker.
“I was notified to come to the school and get Bowen. Bowen was terrified and shaken up by the ordeal. It took a while to finally calm him down and to realize he was going to be OK,” Ish continued.
“It scares me to think about how differently the situation could have been if not for the quick reaction from officer Hammitt,
“Bowen has always looked up to our brave men and woman officers, but now more than ever, he sees how brave and heroic they actually are,” she wrote. “Thank you again from the bottom of our hearts!”
Middle school students gathered in the gym to watch a humbled Officer Hammitt receive a Life Saving Certificate along with a pin for his uniform.
