Four Wood County Special Olympics athletes are headed to the State Golf Tournament after a successful summer season.
The tournament will be held in Cincinnati at the Meadow Links Golfing Academy and The Mill Course beginning at 8 a.m. Tuesday, Sept. 17 and concluding in the afternoon on Wednesday, Sept. 18.
Wood County Special Olympics will be sending three traditional unified teams, which pairs a Special Olympics athlete with a partner. The unified teams include Maggie Hunt and Debbie Leibig, James Mozino and Jason Sisco, as well as Chris Zablocki and Floyd Lite. Zach Parcher will also be competing as an individual athlete.
Parcher and each of the three teams will be competing Wednesday morning.
The mission of Special Olympics is to provide year-round sports training and athletic competition in a variety of Olympic-type sports for children and adults with intellectual disabilities, giving them continuing opportunities to develop physical fitness, demonstrate courage, experience joy and participate in a sharing of gifts, skills and friendship with their families, other Special Olympics athletes and the community.
Approximately 450 athletes participate in the 10 sports offered through Wood County Special Olympics. Anyone with a love of sports and an interest in getting involved with Special Olympics as an athlete or volunteer, can go to sooh.org to learn more, or call the Wood County Board of Developmental Disabilities at 419-315-5115.
