Mark Hummer, Lake Township police chief, said last week he intends to keep a school resource officer on the department roster following the departure of Steve Poiry, who announced he plans to retire Oct. 1.
Poiry’s letter of retirement was read during Tuesday’s meeting of the township trustees.
“He’s going to be incredibly hard to replace,” the chief said. “He’s done a great job in the school.”
Poiry said he has an opportunity other than law enforcement he intends to pursue.
“Even while in stressing financial times, Chief Hummer maintained a commitment to our communities’ children by keeping an SRO in the Lake schools,” the letter says. “There were no political games played regarding the safety of our children in Lake Township and I know many in the community are aware of this commitment. Never have I been told how to perform my duties. Chief Hummer had the faith in me to always uphold my best behavior, do what is in the best interest for the kids and build as many bridges as possible with kids, administrators and staff.”
Richard Welling, a trustee, said he remembered Poiry when he rose through the ranks from part-time to full-time status.
“He’s been a great cop,” Welling said.
Information about the job opening has been posted on the police department Facebook page.
In other business, the trustees approved contracting with Zimmerman Paint Contractors, Fremont, for $4,125 to paint center line stripes on Latcha Road, from Fostoria Road to Pemberville Road; Bradner Road, to State Rt. 795, and Ayers Road, from East Broadway to Luckey Road.
