Senior Holiday Luncheon
Genoa Area Local Schools’ 24th Annual Senior Citizens Holiday Luncheon will be held Dec. 8 at 1 p.m. in the Genoa High School/Middle School cafeteria.

Rapid Registration
Owens Community College will host Rapid Registration Week Nov. 30 through Dec. 5 for students interested in attending for the upcoming spring semester. Spring semester classes begin Jan. 7.

Owens Toledo-area campus will be open 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday through Thursday; 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Friday; and 8 a.m. to noon Saturday during Rapid Registration Week.

Additionally, Rapid Registration Week will be offered at Owens’ Learning Center at The Source on Monroe Street in downtown Toledo Nov. 30 through Dec. 4. Hours will be 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Thursday, Nov. 30 to Dec. 3 and 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Friday, Dec. 4.

Those attending Rapid Registration Week will have the opportunity to learn about Owens’ academic program offerings, to receive academic advising, complete electronic financial aid, learn about deferred payment plans, and select their classes.

Weapons training
Owens Community College’s Center for Emergency Preparedness is offering a new Concealed Weapons Permit Training Program.

The initial 12-hour course will be offered Monday and Tuesday, Nov. 30-Dec. 1, with firing range testing Dec. 3. Classes will be held from 6 to 10 p.m. in the Center for Emergency Preparedness, located at 30150 Tracy Rd., Walbridge (at the intersection of Tracy and Walbridge roads). Registration is limited to the first 15 people who sign up.

“Carrying a concealed handgun is a privilege in the state of Ohio and successfully passing this course allows citizens to carry a concealed handgun legally,” said Mike Cornell, Owens director of the Center for Emergency Preparedness. “Safety is the first principal of the class. Anything less is unacceptable.”

Course content will focus on firearm safety, firearms law and safe gun handling, as well as instruction related to proper maintenance and storage practices for handguns and ammunition. Additional topics include the skills and attitude necessary to use a handgun and its appropriate use for self-defense. The course will culminate with hands-on training at the College’s firing range.

The program will be instructed by certified Ohio Police Academy firearms instructors. The course is expected to be repeated monthly. The cost is $85. Rotary endows scholarship
Owens Community College and the Rotary Club of Perrysburg have established a new endowed scholarship program for Penta Career Center graduates.

The Rotary Club of Perrysburg and its foundation recently presented the Owens Community College Foundation with a $20,000 donation to fund the endowment.

The new scholarship will be awarded to a Penta Career Center high school graduate who has completed at least a two-year program at the school. The student must have attended Perrysburg, Lake or Rossford high school; have achieved a minimum 2.0 cumulative grade point average; be able to demonstrate significant participation in community service activities during high school; and demonstrate financial need.

Students will be selected through a process of screenings and interviews, will be assigned a Rotary mentor and must remain in contact during the term of the scholarship.

Scholarships will not have a stated amount, but are intended to provide fully paid tuition toward an associate’s degree from Owens.

Genoa Kiwanis award grants
The Genoa Area Kiwanis Club has awarded 17 Educational Grants to Genoa Area Local Schools totaling $2033.80.

Teacher of the Year nominations
The East Toledo Family center is seeking nominations for the East Toledo Teacher of the Year Award. Criteria for the award includes educators who have lived, worked or served in East Toledo and who have demonstrated character in one or more of the following areas: innovation, dedication, collaboration, volunteer and/or advocate.

Candidates may be self-nominated or nominated by another person. Forms are available at the Family Center, 1020 Varland Ave. and may be requested by contacting Tracy Garufos at 419-691-1429. All nominations must be submitted by Jan. 29, 2010. Selection is determined by a vote of the Renaissance Gala Planning Committee.

The award will be presented at the Family Center’s annual Renaissance Gala April 24, 2010.

Ribbon-cutting held
A ribbon-cutting ceremony and colors presentation were held as part of a re-dedication of The Maritime Academy Nov. 4.

The re-dedication was held at the new home for The Maritime Academy at 214 Walnut St. near Water Street, in Toledo, formerly the American Maritime Officer's Building.
“This is such a remarkable facility and perfect for our educational needs,” said Renee Marazon, superintendent of The Maritime Academy. “I want to thank the American Maritime Officer's Union, as well as Lucas County and city officials, for helping to make this possible.”

Earlier this year, Maritime Academy secured a three-year lease with purchase option of the former A-M-O Building. The building sat vacant for the past year.
