Students invited to enter Hayes Center political cartoon contest

Press Staff Writer

Students in grades 6-8 and 9-12 are invited to enter a political cartoon contest for a chance to have their work featured in the Hayes Presidential Library & Museums’ upcoming special exhibit.
A political cartoon is a type of editorial cartoon that artists use to express their opinions about politics, public figures, or events. The illustrations are often caricatures, and feature hyperbole and satire to draw attention to issues faced by the world today. Students are invited to voice their opinions through their own political cartoon illustrations.
        Submission information:
        • The contest features a middle school category for grades 6-8 and a high school category for grades 9-12.
        • Entry is open to all students in the appropriate categories in the state of Ohio.
        • Students and teachers will be notified via email if the cartoon has placed.
        • Submission acknowledges that the cartoons will be made available for public viewing, publicity by Hayes Presidential and other purposes.
Submissions may be emailed to or mailed to Rutherford B. Hayes Presidential Library & Museums, Re: Political Cartoon Contest, Spiegel Grove, Fremont, OH 43420. The deadline for entry is Monday, May 31.
Three winners will be picked from each category by a panel of four judges.
All artwork must be verified by a teacher that it is the student’s original work. Teachers must sign the back of the artwork for each submission.

Each submission must include the student’s name, grade and email; the name of the school and the school’s address; the name of the teacher and teacher email.
Winners will have their art featured in the special exhibit “The Press & The Presidency,” which opens Friday, July 3.

Winners will receive a store gift card (third place: $10, second place: $20, first place: $30) – gift cards will be mailed to the school.
Students and their parents will be invited to the members-only opening of the exhibit on Thursday, July 2.
