Student Stars: Genoa third-grader earns Pinewood Derby honors

        Gavin Peters, a third-grader at Genoa Elementary School, placed third in his age group and fourth overall at the Eagle Bay Pinewood Derby held March 8 at Clyde High School. Peters is a member of Bear Pack 342, Williston.
        He is the son of Kevin and Carrie Peters.
 
Penta students excel
        Penta Career Center students earned top awards at the Ohio SkillsUSA Northwest Regional Competition.
        The event, which was held at Penta Career Center on Feb. 14, included 38 competitions. Thirty-one Penta students earned either a gold (first place), silver (second place) or bronze (third place) medal and qualified for the Ohio SkillsUSA Championships that were set to be held in Columbus in April. They include:
        • Automotive Service Technology competition: Daniel Mattimoe, (Oak Harbor High School), a student in Penta’s Automotive Technologies 1 program.
        • Medical Terminology competition: Mary Paengrord (Northwood High School), a student in Penta’s Medical Technologies Academy 1 program.
        • Prepared Speech competition: Marissa Pendry (Northwood High School), a student in Penta’s Cosmetology 1 program.
        • Crime Scene Investigation competition (team of three): Morgan Perkins, (Genoa High School), a student in Penta’s Criminal Justice 1 program.
        • First Aid/CPR competition: Abbey Mackay, (Eastwood High School), a student in Penta’s Firefighter 2 program.
        • Nurse Assisting competition: Amber Mugler, (Woodmore High School), a student in Penta’s Medical Technologies Academy 2 program.
        • Architectural Drafting competition: Georgia Stinson, (Genoa High School) a student in Penta’s Computer Aided Design 2 program.
        SkillsUSA is a national nonprofit organization serving teachers and high school and college students who are preparing for careers in trade, technical and skilled service occupations, including health occupations. The organization provides educational experiences such as leadership, teamwork, citizenship, and character development skills.
