Solomon Lutheran School celebrating 160th anniversary
In celebration of Solomon Lutheran School’s 160th anniversary, Rev. Daniel Beaudoin, Bishop of the Northwestern Ohio Synod of the ELCA, led the school’s weekly Chapel Service for students, faculty, staff and guests on Jan. 18.
After the service, all gathered for refreshments and fellowship in the Woodville school’s newly renovated gymnasium, Cronenwett Hall, named after the first Pastor at Solomon Lutheran Church.
The school opened Jan. 20, 1862, 10 days before the Union launched its ship, the USS Monitor, during the Civil War. It is the longest-running school in the country for the Evangelical Lutheran Church of America (ELCA).
The Solomon Lutheran School building currently serves 87 students in nursery through sixth grade.
The building has recently been renovated with new floor finishes, paint, awnings and plans to air condition the classrooms this summer, Principal Natalie Schiets said.
A new STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) Lab and programming has also been created, thanks to the Johlin Family Foundation. The lab allows students to engage in hands-on learning activities with an educator from Imagination Station, focusing this year on motion, forces, and energy.
“We have maintained full-time, in-person learning throughout the pandemic teaching ELA, math, science, social students, art, music, physical education and Spanish in a Christian environment,” Schiets said. “Our faculty and staff are committed to nurturing our students' growth academically and spiritually and are truly blessed to be able to continue teaching students at this wonderful school.
“Our small class sizes allow teachers to connect personally with students to meet their individual learning needs,” she added.
Solomon Lutheran School, located at 305 W. Main St., is open for enrollment for the 2022-23 school year, accepting applications for students 3 years old through 6th grade.
