Roland A. Henderson

Roland A. Henderson, age 89, of rural Genoa, died on Wed, August 11, 2021. He is survived by his wife of 66 years, Marilyn (Faber), son Craig Henderson (Deborah), of Kentucky, daughters Joy Hammer (Steven), of Toledo, and Jill Wuthrich (Gordon), of Florida, and son Eric Henderson (Tracy), of Columbus, along with 8 grandchildren and 2 great-grandchildren. Also surviving is his sister-in-law Carole Henderson. He was preceded in death by his parents, sister Joan Scott (Reed), and brothers R. Bradley and Roger Henderson.  

Roland was born and grew up in Butler County, PA. He was baptized and confirmed at St. Mark’s Lutheran Church in Butler. Roland was a graduate of Capital University, Columbus, and attended graduate classes at BGSU.  He served in the U.S. Army where he received an award for meritorious service as a chaplain’s assistant, directing 3 choirs which he organized, and serving as organist for multiple chapels each Sunday, with a driver ready to whisk him at the close of services at 1 chapel to the next chapel where he was awaited.

He was an elementary and junior high teacher for 32 years, teaching in Ross Township, Ohio, Navarre School in Toledo, and Genoa Junior High. He served as principal of Solomon Lutheran School in Woodville for 7 years.  He also was a teacher/assistant director for summer migrant classes for 16 years at Allen Elementary School.

Over the years he served as organist and choir director at various area churches and was a home educational consultant for World Book Encyclopedia for 30 years. He also worked as the summer recreational director at Genoa Veterans Park for 9 summers.  

Roland was an active member of St. Mark’s Lutheran Church, 1700 N. Walker St., Graytown, Ohio 43432. Visitation will be at the Robinson-Walker Funeral Home & Crematory, 501 West St., Genoa, on Tuesday, August 17th from 4:00 to 8:00 P.M. Funeral services will be conducted at St. Mark’s Lutheran Church, Graytown, on Wednesday, August 18th at 10:00 A.M.  Interment will be in the Clay Township Cemetery, Genoa.  In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to St. Mark’s Lutheran Church, the Luther Home of Mercy, P.O. Box 187, Williston, Ohio 43468 or to the Donor’s Choice.  Online condolences may be shared with the family at
