Prime Times Briefs: Senior Resources fighting hunger, isolation in Ottawa County

        Ottawa County Senior Resources will participate in the 21st Annual March for Meals, the nationwide celebration of Meals on Wheels programs held each year in March.
        During its Community Champions Week, March 20-24, Senior Resources invites community members and local dignitaries from across the county to join the agency’s Senior Nutrition Program staff of packers, drivers and senior center staff to support the mission to address food insecurities and malnutrition, combat social isolation, enable independence, and improve the health of our seniors in Ottawa County. 
         “With each passing year the demand for senior services in Ottawa County continues to increase,” said Dianne Martin Mortensen, Senior Resources director.  “We are so appreciative of the ongoing support we receive from our county agencies and businesses and look forward to working with these community groups to face the challenges ahead as we provide those in need of our vital lifeline.”

Tax Prep Vouchers
        Ottawa County Senior Resources and the Ottawa County Board of Commissioners are teaming up with tax preparers in Ottawa County to offer a tax prep voucher program for the 2022 tax season aimed at those seniors (60 years of age and older) who qualify.
        Eligibility for these vouchers includes reported income status, residence in Ottawa County and willingness to use selected tax preparers.
        The tax prep voucher pilot program is first-come, first-served and a limited number of vouchers are available.  Vouchers will pay up to $100 per return and is limited to one voucher per senior citizen registered tax payer.
        This voucher is not meant to cover the full cost of a tax return, but is geared towards assisting those most in need with their tax return preparations.

Senior Helping Hands
        Great Lakes Community Action Partnership is again taking applications for the Senior Helping Hands program.
        The purpose of the program is to address minor health and safety-related issues in the house that may prevent a senior from receiving other services. The goal is to help seniors remain in their homes and live independently and safely.
         To qualify, applicants must be at least 60 years old, reside in Sandusky County, and be a homeowner occupying the home. Income qualifications apply.

Senior softball signup
        The East Toledo Senior Center is taking registrations for its 2023 Senior Softball Leagues. All individuals ages 48 and over are eligible to play in the ETSC Senior Leagues. There are two leagues – 48 and over and 56 and over.
        The registration fees are $65 for the 48+ league and the 56+ league. Those who are 56 and over may play on both leagues for $95.
        Games are played on Monday (56+) and Wednesday (48+) evenings at Navarre Park.

Ladies’ Night Out
        The East Toledo Senior Center will hold a Ladies’ Night Out Friday, May 12 from 6-10 p.m.
        The cost is $20, which includes food, four drink tickets, a photo booth and more. There will also be vendors, raffles and a live auction. Attendees must be 21 and older. For tickets or more information, call 419-691-2254.
        Vendors are still being added to the event. There is no cost for space, however, a $25 package of goods/services is required for the auction. Call Brenda Holdren at 419-691-2254 to learn more.
        All proceeds raised will benefit the East Toledo Senior Center to help provide much-needed programs and services to senior citizens.
 
 Free shoulder screening
        Free shoulder screenings will be offered Friday, March 31 from 1-3 p.m. at the Magruder Hospital Orthopedic Clinic.
        The screening will include an x-ray, consultation with an orthopedic nurse practitioners or orthopedic surgeon and a chance to meet with a physical therapist and have other questions answered about post-surgical needs participants might have.
        The Magruder Orthopedic Clinic is located at 611 Fulton St., Suite G, Port Clinton, Suite G.  Appointments for this screening are required and may be made by calling 419-732-4061.
