The Ottawa County Task Force on Aging invited everyone in Ottawa County to “Turn Ottawa County Purple” on June 15 in honor of World Elder Abuse Awareness Day,
“And purple we were as we brought awareness to the abuse, neglect and exploitation of the elderly in our own county,” said Dianne Mortensen, director, Ottawa County Senior Resources.
This year’s theme, “Lifting Up Voices,” encourages everyone to make elder abuse everyone’s business. Approximately one in 10 Americans age 60 and over have experienced some form of elder abuse, with an estimated 1 in five cases being reported to authorities
World Elder Abuse Awareness Day is a call to action for society’s individuals, organizations and community to educate each other on how to identify, address and prevent abuse so we can all do our part to support everyone as we age.
Mortensen thanked those at Ottawa County Job and Family Services, Ottawa County Senior Resources, Magruder Hospital, Stein Hospice, Sojourn Senior Behavioral Health, Salvation Army, Ottawa County Common Pleas Court, OSU Ottawa County Extension Office, Riverview Health Care Campus and all the supporters who wore purple in recognition of the county’s seniors.
To report elder abuse, call the 24-hour Ohio reporting hotline at 1-855-644-6277. To reach Ottawa County directly, call 419-707-8639. For emergencies or immediate assistance, call 9-1-1.
