Roundabout
a bad idea
To the editor: Let’s change the intersection at Woodville and Lemoyne so children five, six, or seven years old have to cross six lanes of moving traffic twice a day just to go to school.
Do any of you think that’s a great idea? Traffic at that intersection is over 17,000 vehicles a day, over 600 of them are trucks and over 270 of them are tractor-trailer rigs.
Trusting a 6-year-old to correctly judge the speed and distance of tractor trailer rigs bearing down on them is a recipe for disaster.
Proponents of putting a roundabout at this intersection adjacent to the school will tell you that traffic must slow down to 18 miles per hour going through this roundabout. Even if that is true, traffic is moving much faster than that when entering a roundabout. Check for yourself next time you enter one.
Half of the crosswalks will need to cross traffic before it enters the roundabout.
Getting a $4.7 million infrastructure improvement for $200,000 would be a great deal were it not for the fact that it puts our children at risk. This is a tragedy waiting to happen.
