James E. "Jim" Slotterbeck

James E. “Jim” Slottterbeck 62 of Woodville, Ohio passed away, surrounded by his loving family & dog, on March 25, 2021 at Mercy St. Vincent’s Hospital in Toledo, following a courageous battle with COVID-19 pneumonia. Jim was born on August 16, 1958 in Toledo, Ohio. He was the son of Dr. Vernon Eugene and Mary Whipple Slotterbeck. Jim was a 1976 graduate of Woodmore High School in Elmore, Ohio and a 1980 graduate of Ashland University earning Bachelor of Science degrees in Business Administration and Energy Management & Technology. 

At Ashland, Jim was a four-year letterman on the varsity golf team and a member of the Phi Delta Theta fraternity. On December 11, 1982, Jim married the love of his life, Nancy Schacht Slotterbeck, who survives. He is also survived by a daughter, Aly (Joe) Horn, Tiffin, Ohio, a sister, Betty Jo (Ralph) Tomassi, Ashland, Ohio, and mother-in-law, Catherine Schacht of Otterbein Portage Valley in Pemberville.  In addition, he is survived by sisters-in-law: Joani Hamons and Carole (Nick) Espinoza, nieces Valerie and Jacqui Espinoza, all of Perrysburg and Jordan Hamons, Cincinnati.   He also leaves behind his beloved dog, Lansbury.  He was preceded in death by his parents and his father-in-law, Jerome Schacht.

Following graduation from college, Jim was employed at Libbey Owens Ford, Licensed Specialty Products/Real Geese Waterfowl, Hidden Hills Golf Course, America’s Auto Auction, Fin, Feather & Fur Outfitters and served as boys varsity golf coach at Woodmore High School. He was an accomplished and well-known outdoorsman and was featured in numerous outdoor publications. An expert in hunting, waterfowl habitat, and nature, he also judged the World Goose Calling Competition on various occasions and was instrumental in the development of Real Geese Silhouette Decoys. Jim’s golf prowess continued into his adult life, where he won many tournaments and scored numerous hole-in-ones.  Most importantly, he was a loving and devoted father, brother, husband, and friend. His support of his daughter and son-in-law in their many endeavors was unwavering.

Marsh & Marsteller Funeral Home has been entrusted with the arrangements, which will include a graveside service on 3:30 p.m., Tuesday, March 30, 2021 in Westwood Cemetery, Woodville, Ohio with Jay Horn officiating the service. Family and friends are welcome to attend, and face masks and outdoor social distancing will be observed. 

The family would like to extend their heart-felt gratitude to the physicians and nursing staff at Mercy St. Vincent’s Hospital ICU unit for their compassionate care throughout Jim’s illness, especially nurses Erin, Matt and Nick.  They would also like to thank the many family members and friends who extended such loving kindness throughout Jim’s life and recent illness.  In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be made to the Lakota Local Schools, Therapy Dog Fund/Lansbury, 5200 County Road 13, Kansas, Ohio 44841.
