Genoa Schools Scholarship Foundation honors 2019 awardees

        The Genoa Area Local Schools Scholarship Foundation, Inc. announced the recipients of their scholarships at the high school’s Honors Award Program on May 9.
        The Foundation was organized in 1991 as a public charitable organization created by the citizens of the community to improve the opportunity for a quality education for those who attend and graduate from the Genoa Area Local Schools. It has held a tax-free status with the IRS since March 2, 1994.
        In 2019, 72 scholarships were awarded to 45 seniors through the Foundation. Scholarships range in value from $300 to $2,000.
        There are currently 40 individual scholarship funds that offered 55 scholarships this year. The various scholarship funds in the Foundation total over $850,000 and continue to grow.
        “Our growth continues due to a community program that is funded by caring, helpful and thoughtful individuals, along with local businesses and community clubs, who support Genoa Schools,” said Diane Gerkensmeyer, Scholarship Foundation president.
        In addition, 17 scholarships were given by various individuals, businesses and organizations in conjunction with the Foundation.
        The 2019 scholarship recipients included:
        • Allen-Clay Joint Fire District Firefighter Associations Scholarships – Bailey Bryant, Amanda Tucholski.
        • Helen Asmus Memorial Scholarships – Sydney Goetz, Matthew Reitzel, Amanda Szczecinski, Nicholas Weaver.
        • Stella Bertz Scholarship – Jordan Iffland.
        • Doris Brossia Memorial Scholarship – Grace Zurawski.
        • Clay-Genoa High School Reunion Scholarship – Sasha Roberts.
        • Curtice Kidz/Allen Township Scholarship – Marissa Young.
        • Envirosafe Scholarship – Brandon Trumbull.
        • Timothy J. Fisher/Briana Bertok-Schack Memorial Science Scholarship – Amanda Tucholski.

Additional Local Scholarships – awarded by organizations/trusts affiliated with the Genoa Area Local Schools Scholarship Foundation, however, scholarships are not funded by the Foundation.

        Contributions to the various scholarship funds can be made through gifts, honorariums, memorials, wills, etc. Gifts of money or stock may be designated to create a new scholarship or to the principal of an existing scholarship fund.
        Each individual scholarship fund has a documented agreement including a section on how the scholarship winners are to be chosen.
        A gift of $100 or more (for an individual/couple) or $500 or more (for an organization/ corporation) may be listed on a plaque at the auditorium entrance in high school. Contribution details are included in a Foundation brochure which is available at the school office and at Genoa banks and funeral homes.
