Former Waite tennis coach taking over at Lourdes

Lourdes University has announced that the school will add men’s and women’s tennis to its varsity sport lineup beginning in the 2019-2020 academic year and that former Waite coach Bobby Johnson will serve as the teams’ head coach.
“We are excited to add tennis to our vast array of athletic offerings,” Athletics Director Janet Eaton said.  “I believe that this continues to diversify the options our student-athletes have here at Lourdes to compete while also growing our athletic department.”
Johnson arrives at Lourdes after serving as the head boys and girls coach at Rossford High School this past season.  Previously, Johnson had served as an assistant coach for Waite, where he helped with the doubles teams.
“I'm thrilled and excited to be a part of the Lourdes University athletic department as the head coach for the men's and women's tennis programs,” Johnson stated.  “Lourdes athletics mission statement is important to me, as it amplifies some of the same values that I have always incorporated into my mission as a coach.  I am excited to get started.  Go Gray Wolves!”
Johnson has coached United States Tennis Association (USTA) 18 and over tennis since 2013 and run a kids camp for the Navarre Park Tennis Association since 2015.  In 2017, Johnson was honored the William T. Rathbun Award for the promotion of tennis in the Toledo area.  He is a certified member of the Professional Tennis Registry.
“I am excited to have Coach Johnson join our Gray Wolf team,” Eaton added.  “He has a great deal of tennis knowledge and his expertise will help us get the program off and running.”
With the addition of the two tennis teams, the school will sponsor 25 varsity sports beginning next fall.  Lourdes University already sponsors baseball, men’s and women’s basketball, men’s and women’s bowling, competitive cheer, men’s and women’s cross country, eSports, men’s and women’s golf, men’s and women’s lacrosse, men’s and women’s soccer, softball, men’s and women’s volleyball, and wrestling.  The school also previously announced the reinstatement of its men’s and women’s indoor and outdoor track and field programs beginning next fall.
