Early birder at Maumee Bay

Michael Darmstadt, of Elyria, Ohio, gets a jump on birding at the Maumee Bay State Park boardwalk. A retired police officer and crime scene photographer, Darmstadt now finds photographing birds to his liking, spotting over a half dozen different varieties on his first day out. The Biggest Week in American Birding Festival, hosted by the Black Swamp Bird Observatory, has begun and runs through May 12 at Maumee Bay State Park Lodge and Conference Center.
