Memorial Day
Ceremony set
A Memorial Day Observance Ceremony will be held Monday, May 30 at 9 a.m. at the Clay Township Cemetery, 439 S. Opfer-Lentz Rd.
Guest speaker will be Robert E. Stewart, president of Vietnam Veterans of America, Chapter #35.
The event is sponsored by the Genoa American Legion and Auxiliary with Genoa American Legion and the Genoa High School bands. The observance will also include a cannon salute by Taylor’s Battery and a dove release.
Those attending may bring a lawn chair, as seating is limited.
The Legion also reminds area residents that Poppy Day will be held in Genoa Friday, May 27.

Genealogy meeting
The Ottawa County Genealogical Society will hold a meeting Tuesday, May 17 at 5:30 p.m. at the Ida Rupp Public Library, 310 Madison St., Port Clinton.
The speaker will be Jane Crandall, who will present, “Gravestone Carvers and Icons.” The public is invited to attend.

Voter registration
drive planned
The Oregon Democratic Club will hold a voter registration drive Sunday, May 22 from 4-6 p.m. corner of Wheeling and Starr Avenue, Oregon.
Any Ohio citizen can drive thru or walk-up to check their current registration status, register to vote or update their voter registration.
Food trucks will be on hand and attendees will have an opportunity to learn more about how to get involved in upcoming elections.

County auction
service changed
Effective May 11, the Wood County Commissioners transitioned the Internet auction service to GovDeals.
County-owned personal property not needed for public use is listed for sale to the general public and other public entities for a 10-day period, following an initial five-day “Classified” listing for county departments.
Users of the Internet auction and those interested in such property may register for GovDeals using the Internet auction quick link provided on the county’s website, www.woodcountyohio.gov. If previously enrolled in LightGov, re-enrollment in the new service is required.
The change to the new vendor also includes electronic payments directly through the bidders’ GovDeal’s bidder account. The successful bidder will have five business days to provide full payment and 10 days to schedule a pick-up of purchased items.
GovDeals provides technical assistance to users by calling 800 613-0156 ext. 2, 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday through Friday, with the exception of holidays. For additional information regarding the internet auction process in general, contact the commissioners’ office at 419-354-9100.

Waste collection
registration May 19

May 19 is the deadline to register for the TV and electronics waste collection hosted by the Ottawa Sandusky Seneca Solid Waste District.
The collection is open to residents of the three counties as well as residents of the cities of Bellevue and Fostoria.
There will be no charges for flat panel LCD/LED or plasma TV’s. There will be a $5 charge for glass tube televisions that are 24-inch or less and $10 for televisions that are 25-inch and larger. Console, DLP, and projection screen TV’s will not be not accepted in this collection. Television screens with broken screens are also not accepted for the safety of the collection volunteers.
Registration can be done online at RecycleOSS.org, or by calling 419-334-7222 extension 0.
Registration for collections of residential tires, hazardous waste, and appliances will begin June 1.

Jam recall
Mrs. Miller’s Homemade Jams in Fredericksburg, O. is voluntarily recalling its Smokey BBQ Bacon Jam and Spicy Chili Bacon Jam, packaged in 9 oz. glass jars. The recall is due to an undeclared soy allergen found in the Worcestershire Sauce and Hickory Smoke ingredients used in these jams. The recall has been initiated due to the ingredient label not stating a soy allergen.
Products were available for sale from 04/01/2019 - 05/09/2022 online and at retailers and distributors.
Locally, the products were sold at:
-Orchard Farm Stand, 3350 NE Catawba Rd. Port Clinton,
-Beekers General Store, 226 E. Front St. Pemberville
The issue was discovered during a routine inspection conducted by the Ohio Department of Agriculture. There have been no reports of illness involving the product. However, people who have an allergy or severe sensitivity to soy could run the risk of a serious or life-threatening allergic reaction if they consume this product. Individuals exhibiting signs or symptoms of food borne illness or allergic reaction should contact a physician immediately.
