“Poe in the Parlor” readings to be offered at Historic Hayes Home

In all of American literature, no writer is more closely associated with the Halloween season than Edgar Allan Poe.
Poe was one of the first authors to earn a living from his craft, and he is credited with inventing the detective story, as well as an early contributor to what later became the genre of science fiction. But Poe is most often remembered for his unnerving and macabre poetry and short stories.
President Rutherford B. Hayes, a lifelong avid reader, had a three-volume anthology of Poe’s work in his personal library.
Hayes Presidential will remember Poe’s legacy by hosting “Poe in the Parlor” in the Hayes Home on Tuesdays, Oct. 18, and Oct. 25 at 6:30 p.m.
Hayes Home Guide Kent McClary will give a dramatic reading of selected Poe works in the large parlor of the historic home.
Tickets are required and are $10 for non-members and $8 for Hayes Presidential members. They are available online at rbhayes.org/news/2022/08/20/general/poe-in-the-parlor-a-dramatic-reading-in-the-historic-hayes-home/.
Tickets also will be sold at the front desk the day of the event, pending availability.
For information on this and other events, call 419-332-2081, visit rbhayes.org or follow Hayes Presidential on social media.
