Hayes Presidential Library & Museums recently kicked off the Christmas season with the opening of the “Hayes Train Special” model train display, which has been a beloved holiday tradition for area families for the past 27 years.
The multi-tiered display features a variety of trains that wind through a winter wonderland reminiscent of President Rutherford B. Hayes’ day.
Visitors can watch the trains wind through tunnels and villages. They can also get involved by pushing buttons that run one of the trains, turn the Ferris wheel, send the ice skaters gliding across the pond and more.
Admission to the train display, which is located in the museum auditorium, is free. A donation box will be available for those who wish to make a gift to Hayes Presidential for the display.
The “Hayes Train Special” will remain on exhibit though Sunday, Jan. 8. For hours and holiday closings information, visit rbhayes.org/visit-us/visitor-information/.
Croghan Colonial Bank and the Gordon W. Knight Family are sponsoring the exhibit.
        Model train clinic
On Saturday, Jan. 7, the annual model train clinic will take place from 1-4 p.m. in the “Hayes Train Special” display area. Model train hobbyists will assist guests with repair and upkeep questions about their model trains.
Tickets for the train clinic are $5 per person ages 6 and older. Kids 5 and younger are admitted for free. Tickets are available at rbhayes.org.
Those who bring trains to the clinic can also run their trains on the “Hayes Train Special” track. The track fits standard, O-gauge and G-gauge trains.
The "Hayes Train Special" and train clinic are part of Hayes Presidential's season of holiday events, called “A Presidential Christmas.”
Located at the corner of Hayes and Buckland avenues in Fremont, Hayes Presidential is America’s first presidential library and the forerunner of the federal presidential library system. It is partially funded by the state of Ohio and affiliated with the Ohio History Connection.
