A toxic algal bloom may continue to flourish in the western basin of Lake Erie this summer, but Toledo water officials say there is little chance that any substantial amount of poisonous microcystin will again be found in city’s drinking water.

The Northwest Water and Sewer District in 2015 designed an above ground 2 million gallon flow equalization basin or sanitary sewer overflow storage tank to hold sewage and storm water during heavy rain events before it is released and treated by Oregon’s sanitary sewer treatment plant.

Toledo has been working to eliminate Combined Sewer Overflows (CSOs) as part of the Toledo Waterways Initiative (TWI). The TWI is a multi-million dollar project to upgrade the sewer system and prevent raw sewage runoff from getting into Lake Erie.
